SUMMARY:UK and World Wide Spectrum Scale User Group Meeting

SUMMARY:Spectrum Scale Request for Enhancements Voting
DESCRIPTION:GPFS/Spectrum Scale Users\, \nHere’s a long-ish note about our plans to try and improve the RFE process. We’ve tried to include a tl;dr version if you just read the headers. You’ll find the details underneath 😉 and reading to the end is ideal. \nIMPROVING THE RFE PROCESS\nAs you’ve heard on the list\, and at some of the in-person User Group events\, we’ve been talking about ways we can improve the RFE process. We’d like to begin having an RFE forum\, and have it be de-coupled from the in-person events because we know not everyone can travel. \nLIGHTNING PRESENTATIONS ON-LINE \nIn general terms\, we’d have regular on-line events\, where RFEs could be very briefly (5 minutes\, lightning talk) presented by the requester. There would then be time for brief follow-on discussion and questions. The session would be recorded to deal with large time zone differences. \nFOLLOW UP POLL \nA poll\, independent of current RFE voting\, would be conducted a couple days after the recording was available to gather votes and feedback on the RFEs submitted —we may collect site name\, to see how many votes are coming from a certain site. \nMAY NOT GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME\nWe view this supplemental RFE process as organic\, that is\, we’ll learn as we go and make modifications. The overall goal here is to highlight the RFEs that matter the most to the largest number of UG members by providing a venue for people to speak about their RFEs and collect feedback from fellow community members. \nRFE PRESENTERS WANTED\, SUBMISSION DEADLINE OCTOBER 1ST\nWe’d like to guide a small handful of RFE submitters through this process the first time around\, so if you’re interested in being a presenter\, let us know now. We’re planning on doing the online meeting and poll for the first time in mid-October\, so the submission deadline for your RFE is October 1st. If it’s useful\, when you’re drafting your RFE feel free to use the list as a sounding board for feedback. Often sites have similar needs and you may find someone to collaborate with on your RFE to make it useful to more sites\, and thereby get more votes. Some guidelines are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o8nN39DTU32qj_EFia5wRhnvfvNfr3cI/view?usp=sharing \nYou can submit by emailing your submission to rfe@spectrumscaleug.org \nPARTICIPANTS (AKA YOU!!)\, VIEW AND VOTE\nWe are seeking very good participation in the RFE on-line events needed to make this an effective method of Spectrum Scale Community and IBM Developer collaboration.  It is to your benefit to participate and help set priorities on Spectrum Scale enhancements!!  We want to make this process light lifting for you as a participant.  We will limit the duration of the meeting to 1 hour to minimise the use of your valuable time. Please register for the event and voting using the Eventbrite link and we’ll send you details of the online meeting nearer the time.

SUMMARY:GPFS/SS UG Event at ORNL\,Register by September 1
DESCRIPTION:Registration link\, you can register just for GPFS/SS day at $0:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/hpcxxl-2018-summer-meeting-registration-47111539884\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT: September 1st is the deadline to register for HPCXXL and the GPFS Day. Registration closes earlier than normal. This is due to the background check required to attend the event on site at ORNL. The access review process takes at least 3 weeks to complete for foreign nationals and 1 week to complete for US Citizens. So don’t wait too long to make your travel decisions.About HPCXXL:HPCXXL is a user group for sites which have large supercomputing and storage installations. Because of the history of HPCXXL\, the focus of the group is on large-scale scientific/technical computing using IBM or Lenovo hardware and software\, but other vendor hardware and software is also welcome. Some of the areas we cover are: Applications\, Code Development Tools\, Communications\, Networking\, Parallel I/O\, Resource Management\, System Administration\, and Training. We address topics across a wide range of issues that are important to sustained petascale scientific/technical computing on scaleable parallel machines. Some of the benefits of joining the group include knowledge sharing across members\, NDA content availability from vendors\, and access to vendor developers and support staff. The HPCXXL user group is a self-organized and self-supporting group. Members and affiliates are expected to participate actively in the HPCXXL meetings and activities and to cover their own costs for participating. HPCXXL meetings are open only to members and affiliates of the HPCXXL. HPCXXL member institutions must have an appropriate non-disclosure agreement in place with IBM and Lenovo\, since at times both vendors disclose and discuss information of a confidential nature with the group.

DESCRIPTION:UK May 2017 User Group: Registration\n\n \n\nWe’re flattered that we’ve seen some advertising us as the Global Spectrum Scale user group event\, and its great that we’re doing well. This year’s event will be bigger than ever with space for up to 200 attendees\, we’ve had to move out of IBM Client Centre in South Bank and are heading north to Manchester! \nThe UK Spring user group will take place over two days on 9th and 10th May 2017 at the Macdonald Manchester Hotel\, Manchester. We’d like to thank IBM and our sponsors for supporting the event and the evening networking/social event on the evening of 9th May 2017. \nAs usual\, we will have a packed agenda with speakers from the IBM development teams\, user talks as well as technical talks from our sponsors. \nThe hotel where the event is taking place has reserved a limited number of rooms for the night before the event (8th May) and the night of the event (9th May). The rates are £115 B&B and £145 B&B per room per night respectively and if anyone wishes to book they can call the hotel 0344 879 9088 and quote code OCFP090517 to benefit from these rates. Please ensure you have confirmed your ticket via the registration page before booking your hotel room. \nThe agenda for the day is a bit further down the page and we are looking for users to do a short presentation on their use of Spectrum Scale/GPFS. Please contact us if you’d like to volunteer. These are often the most valuable talks of the event so please don’t be shy! \nSponsors\nWe’d very much like to thank the following sponsors for supporting the user group meeting by providing funding to support the evening social event: \n\n\n\nArcaStream\n\nDDN\n\n\n\nEllexus\n\nLenovo\n\n\n\nIBM\n\nMellanox\n\n\n\nOCF\n\nSeagate\n\n\n\n\n\nMedia Sponsor:\n \nAgenda\nDay 1 – 9th May 2017\n\n\n\n09:00 – 10:00\nRegistration & Networking\n\n\n10:00 – 10:30\nOpening & Welcome – Simon Thompson (UG)\, Michael Daubman (IBM)\n\n\n10:30 – 11:20\nSpectrum Scale Update – Ulf Troppens (IBM)\n\n\n11:20 – 11:40\nESS Update – Christopher Maestas (IBM)\n\n\n11:40 – 12:00\nSponsor Talk 1 – Ellexus: Catching rogue jobs before they overload shared storage: an I/O profiling case study – Dr. Rosemary Francis\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nLunch & Networking\n\n\n13:00 – 13:20\nCustomer Talk – “The UK Research Data Facility” – Kieran Leach (EPCC)\n\n\n13:20 – 13:40\nSponsor Talk 2 – DDN: AFM Case Studies – Vic Cornell\n\n\n13:40 – 14:30\nSpectrum Scale Cloud Deployments – Christopher Maestas (IBM)\n\n\n14:30 – 14:50\nLicensing – Carl Zetie (IBM)\n\n\n14:50 – 15:20\nCoffee and Networking\n\n\n15:20 – 15:40\nSponsor Talk 3 – Arcastream: Automated Data Curation and Discovery with Spectrum Scale and ArcaStream – Jez Tucker & Barry Evans\n\n\n15:40 – 16:30\nProblem Determination – Simon Lorenz (IBM)\n\n\n16:30 – 17:20\nBest Practices – Olaf Weiser (IBM)\n\n\n17:50 – 18:00\nWrap up\n\n\n18:00\nFinish\n\n\n19:00\nEvening Social Event\, drinks and food – Manchester Museum of Science and Industry\n\n\n\nDay 2 – 10th May 2017\n\n\n\n08:30 – 09:00\nCoffee and Networking\n\n\n09:00 – 10:00\nParallel Breakout/workshop session 1 \n\nIntegration with Spectrum Protect for Backup – Fabian Kulhl (IBM)\nDocker Support / Update on metadata sizing – Olaf Weiser (IBM)\, Indulis Bernsteins (IBM)\nCES Authentication / Spectrum Scale Security (Meet the Devs) – Sandeep Ramesh (IBM)\n\n\n\n\n10:00 – 11:00\nParallel Breakout/workshop session 2 \n\nIntroduction to AFM and Use Cases – Nils Haustein (IBM)\nObject\, SwiftHLM and OpenStack (cloud) – Sandeep Ramesh (IBM)\, Simon Lorenz (IBM)\nGUI and REST API (Meet the Devs) – Alexander Wolf (IBM)\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 12:00\nParallel Breakout/workshop session 3 \n\nAutomation of Storage Services – Nils Haustein (IBM)\nContainer and Virtualisation support (Cloud) – John Lewars (IBM)\nHDFS Support (Meet the Devs) – Piyush Chaudrhary (IBM)\n\n\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nLunch & Networking\n\n\n13:00 – 13:20\nSponsor Talk 4 – Mellanox: RoCE and Spectrum Scale – RDMA support and performance over Ethernet – Darren Harkins\n\n\n13:20 – 13:40\nCustomer Talk – AFM Migration – The road to perdition – Mark Roberts (AWE) & Laurence Horrocks-Barlow (OCF)\n\n\n13:40 – 14:00\nSponsor Talk 5 – Seagate: Accelerating Spectrum Scale with an Intelligent IO Manager – Ray Coetzee\n\n\n14:00 – 14:20\nCustomer Talk – TBC\n\n\n14:20 – 14:50\nCoffee and Networking\n\n\n14:50 – 16:00\nResearch Topics – Sven Oehme (IBM)\n\n\n16:00 – 16:30\nWrap-up and feedback – Simon Thompson (UG)\, Michael Daubman (IBM)\n\n\n16:30\nFinish\n\n\n\nRegistration\nTo register for this year’s event\, please use our EventBrite event page at:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/spectrum-scalegpfs-user-group-spring-2017-tickets-32113696932 \nRegistration is now open. \nPlease note that we are currently limiting registrations to 3 per organisation to ensure as many organisations as possible are able to attend and places are strictly limited due to room capacity.
